THE NICKNAME OF “PURITO”
The nickname of Purito has its origin in a training with the ONCE team of Manolo Saiz, during a concentration in El Bosque (Cádiz). While climbing a mountain port with Laurent Jelabert and the other team riders, he staged an attack by pretending to smoke a cigar to show that he had plenty of strength. This nickname spread throughout the press to the point that he became better known as Purito Rodríguez than Joaquim Rodríguez.
